Bowen Therapy was named after its inventor, Tom Bowen, a gifted Australian therapist who practiced in Geelong, a small town south of Melbourne. Bowen did not teach his method but did allow several people to observe his work, and this is how his therapy came to be taught to others after his death in 1982. Presently, there are about 1,000 people practicing Bowen Therapy in the UK.
Bowen Therapy is a holistic, gentle and relaxing remedial treatment, using small rolling-type moves over muscles, tendons and soft tissue. These moves will gently stimulate the fascia throughout the body, helping to relieve tension, reduce pain and initiate the healing process. There is no manipulation, or adjustment of hard tissue and no force is used or needed.
A treatment will take about 50 minutes and consists of sets of moves with a few minutes rest in between. These breaks allow the body to absorb and respond to the Bowen, promoting healing, pain relief, recovery of energy and encouragement to the body to realign itself. Ideally, clients will have 3 or 4 single weekly treatments to achieve maximum benefit, and then progress to a maintenance programme. Bowen Therapy can be used for general well-being and stress management. Some sports players report that they re-injure less and heal more quickly following treatments.
Bowen is so gentle it is safe to use on new born babies, children, pregnant women, the elderly and people suffering from chronic disease. It can also be very beneficial before and after operations, following a stroke or childbirth. For most treatments, no undressing is needed, but please wear thin, loose fitting clothes. You will be asked to lay face down on a couch and then turn over after about 20 minutes. At the clinic in Middleton Pam may be treating two clients in one room. Bowen can also be performed whilst sitting on a chair. Our therapy tables are portable and set at one height. They are quite strong and can bear up to 18 stone. They measure:- length 182 cm (72 inches) width 60 cm (24 inches).
It is important not to receive any other therapies (ie: reiki, massage, reflexology etc) seven days before or after a Bowen treatment. Mixing therapies can result in the body becoming overloaded with too much different information and may affect the outcome of the treatment. It is perfectly safe to continue any medication, medical advice, exercise and nutritional programme, herbal, homeopathy or bach flower remedies during treatment. Drinking enough water helps the body to heal. Ideally, you should drink 1.5 litres of water each day. If you can, please bring a bottle of water with you.
